Shine started this petition to Minister Mary Butler

Dear Minister,

We write to you in support for increased and sustained funding for psychosis specific supports in Ireland, in particular HSE Early Intervention in Psychosis programme and community-based NGO Shine.

Psychosis is an illness and an experience that is still much stigmatised.

The experience of psychosis significantly affects many aspects of our lives, causing a disruption to relationships, education, employment and community life.

The following circumstances affect people with psychosis and their families

  • Lack of knowledge and understanding for the illness within services,
  • Consequences and distress of hospitalisation, particularly involuntary admissions due to point one
  • Inappropriate/lack of appropriate treatment options,
  • Stigma,
  • Lack of community based and practical supports around education and employment,
  • Lack of family education and family support.

What supported people and their families affected by psychosis was

  • Services and staff that understood the impact of psychosis
  • Being informed and educated on aspects of psychosis
  • Recovery education and peer groups
  • Individual recovery support worker
  • Education and employment supports
  • Access to services in a community setting

Thank you for taking the time to read this letter and I hope that you will consider increased and sustained funding for psychosis supports within HSE services and the valuable community NGO sector.

Yours Faithfully,
