Protect the eyesight that saves lives - Give our lifeguards sunglasses

When the rest of the country celebrates saving a life with gallantry awards, honours and cash tributes, there is a bunch for whom saving lives is everyday. Other lives are their living: on any given day during peak tourist season they save at least one. Meet the lifeguard manning the coast of Kerala - a contract labourer with work only on alternate days, no pension or medical benefits. Heck, with not even a pair of decent sunglasses. "Even the sunglasses some of us wear come out of our own pockets – or are donated by some compassionate tourist," one told me.
Continued exposure to sunlight - as mandated by this job - causes cataract, muscular degeneration and even temporary loss of vision. If they lose sight, even for a short period, others' lives are vastly endangered.
This is a request to the Government of Kerala, Ministry of Tourism, the Kerala State Tourism Development Corporation and all other stakeholders in the tourism sector to take necessary steps so as to ensure an effective pair of sunglasses for our lifeguards.
