Stop measuring children’s BMI

Stop measuring children’s BMI

I am starting this petition following my concerns about my sons recent 27-30 month child health review, where we were subjected to a measurement to work out his BMI. He is two years old!
My understanding is that this is now a normal part of this review, in line with the plan to reduce childhood obesity by 2030.
While I understand obesity is a problem in Scotland, a persons (never mind a child's) BMI is an inaccurate portrayal of a healthy body and the impact that the outcome could have on the child and parent could be catastrophic. A child’s weight at two years old does not mirror their weight through childhood or adulthood. This measurement, I can only assume, will capture a minority of children who will go on to develop obesity in later childhood, therefore including it widely is unnecessary.
I have no interest (nor will I ever) in my child's BMI, especially not at two years old. Advice should be given to parents about regular exercise and eating a healthy balanced diet with only a few treats, not potential referrals to dieticians or cutting food intake.
I find the inclusion of this measurement at such a young age (and any age) and it's potential impact on the child or the parent terrifying and I am hoping The Scottish Government will reconsider it's appropriateness.
