If Dr.Emile Abou Ghaly was due to retire, why was this post not advertised months ago but only now? Now there will be possibly hundreds of people waiting while a consultant surgeon is recruited to fill this position. It would make more sense to keep Mr.Abou Ghaly on until the position is filled. There are many more unanswered questions as to why the registrar, Mr.Khan's contract has also not been renewed.
Please listen to this recent radio interview that sets out the concerns around this :
The Minor Procedure Facility where day surgeries were performed is vital and a better service than waiting for hours at some hospital 65 - 100 miles away in Cork city this man is an excellent surgeon and a loss to an excellent hospital serving the people of Bantry, Beara and other surrounding areas. There is apparently a locum attending from Cork but there are many questions and uncertainty around this. The highly revered and respected Mr.Murray attends from Tralee once a month to perform procedures but the current situation would just mean that his workload is potentially doubled and the waiting lists could grow longer.
We are appealing to you Minister Simon Harris to reverse this decision immediately until a new consultant surgeon is hired and to actually invest in Bantry General hospital, not cut services further by stealth whether intentional or not. We are also questioning why Mr.Khan's contract has not been renewed. No more cutbacks please Minister Harris. Let’s get the ball rolling and support the people’s TD in West Cork Michael Collins and hope to reinstate Mr.Abou Ghaly until a suitable replacement is found for him. Thank you.
