Re Callan Park building set for demolition, proposed use for Balmain Para Rowing Club

We the below signed want to express our support for the repurposing of building 514 (or in the alternative Building 505) in Callan Park. Currently the recommendation is to landscape the area, demolishing the building that is currently there. We believe that this is a wasted opportunity to use the facilities that are already there. We wish to express our support for the Balmain Para Rowers Club to accommodate the building and use the facilities already there.

The Balmain Para Rowing club currently shares facilities at Balmain Rowing Club in Lower White Street. These facilities are lacking in accessibility for those who are part of the program – namely lack of ramps, poor accessibility to the facilities and general access issues for the members.

The facilities at the Callan Park site (accessible toilets, ramps, flat land and ample space for equipment) would allow the club to grow and facilitate its current member’s needs. We also understand that if granted use of the facilities, a public pontoon could be applied for and approved. This would be an addition that is open for use by all of the community – not just the Balmain Para Rowers.

Understanding that the building does require some work, the BPRC has already had building assessments and donations of time and equipment to make the necessary improvements.

We write to you in the hope that you can bring this issue to the table and show support for the Balmain Para Rowers in their quest to secure Building 514 in Callan Park as their base.
