Fairness in Religions in School . started this petition to Minister for Education Martin Dixon and Parliamentary Secretary for Education Clem Newton-Brown

Every week unqualified volunteers take control of public school classrooms to evangelise children through “Special Religious Instruction”.  Teachers are forbidden to teach.  Children are separated from their friends and sent to different classrooms. Volunteers with a missionary intent spend this time instructing children for a religious objective that is out of step with the values of public education.

The leaders of these programs have been clear that their aim is not to teach about religion but rather to "develop a new congregation and make disciples".

(Evonne Paddison, CEO ACCESS Ministries)

This is the reality inside our public schools today.  Special Religious Instruction promotes division between children and erodes the existing harmony and understanding in our multicultural and multi-faith community.  Children whose parents choose that they do not attend these classes have been left in broom cupboards, made to collect garbage or sat at the back of the classes.

Teachers should be trusted to teach our children together and to continue providing the current values-based education.

Families should be trusted to attend to the religious formation of their children. Special Religious Instruction should not be provided for in the Education Act.

We call on the Minister for Education to show honesty and leadership in providing the legislative change that is needed to change this unfair system and uphold the values of public education.
