Campaign for change within Irish Defence Forces

We are the Spouses, Partners and Concerned Family Members of the Defence Forces. We have come together and formed the Wives & Partners of Defence Forces (WPDF).
Our rationale and reason for forming this group is that we recognise that the Defence Forces are not afforded the same access as any other public sector. They are not entitled to engage in protest, strike or industrial action in relation to all of the cuts and the deterioration of conditions that they and indeed their families have experienced. Fundamentally, while all public servants have had their wages attacked since 2009, enlisted personnel of the Defence Forces are in a unique situation. Not only were their wages particularly poor before any cuts, they are the poorest paid public servants in the country. As a result we endeavour to act on their behalf and we petition the Minister for Defence and Paul Kehoe for the following:
- The removal of all legal restraints surrounding the right to trade unionisation in the Irish Defence Forces
- Immediate full pay restoration be put in place for all Military, Naval, and Air Force personnel
- Immediate stoppage of the drug Lariam which is impacting on the health and wellbeing of our loved ones
- The immediate review of the post 1994 contracts whereby at present those who have not met the rank of Sergeant (& are tech 1 & 2) have to retire after 21 years. We believe that this policy is unfair & nonsensical. Why discharge healthy, competent, skilled & experienced personnel when they have a preference to stay & have the requisite skill set.
