The Irish Wheelchair Association's decision to close their national and only holiday respite resort, Cuisle, for people with disabilities was made November 1st 2019, giving less than a month's notice and without consulting their 20,000 members, 14,000 of whom have a disability. These are the most vulnerable in Irish society and deserve to be informed and given a platform for their voice to be heard.

The reasons given by IWA CEO Rosemary Keogh and Tony Cunningham National director, in the joint Oireachtas health committee meeting 21/11/19 were deeply flawed and contradictory. The Oireachtas unanimously called for a stay of execution for 6-12 months, which the IWA refused.

We're calling on the public accounts committee (PAC) to investigate how IWA is managed financially and how it serves it's members needs.

It's concerning that the IWA board have used the same flawed reason, fire safety concerns, for the closure of their remaining two holiday centres for people with disabilities in the space of two years, Claddagh Court 2018 and now Cuisle 2019.

We're calling on IWA members, 99% of whom still do not know that this decision was made on their behalf, to contact our disability rights campaign Facebook page 'Irish Wheelchair Association EGM open forum' and request an Extraordinary General Meeting form which we can email or post members , and which can be posted directly to IWA headquarters, Áras Chúchulainn, Blackheath Dr, Clontarf East, Dublin 3, with 'EGM' written on envelope and digital photo record kept for the individual.
