Hi everyone! For the last year I have been working on a submission to transport NSW regarding the M6 stage 1 Motorway (previously known as the F6 project). As you may know, the project is set to go ahead after review of community submissions and feedback.

Outrageously, in the published design, transport NSW completely neglected to mention or respond to the requests outlined in the submission, which was supported by 20 residential and business owner signatures, and further supported by our local council. I have written a letter to the transport minister outlining the issues detailed in our community submission, which called for the following improvements to be implemented.

  •  Improvements to pedestrian and cyclist paths between Rockdale station and Brighton Le sands along Bay street (lighting, planting, wider paths).

  • A reduction in speed limit on Bay street from 60km/hr to 50km/hr (this would not materially increase travel times, but would improve safety along this strip, which is overrepresented in crash statistics).

Disappointingly, the transport minister’s response was dismissive and stated that ‘these options were not considered, because Bay street is not heavily utilised by pedestrians’. This shows a complete lack of understanding of our area and our community, and in my response, I stated that our community will not support a transport minister that is so out of touch with our local community. Anyone who knows Bay street, knows very well how heavily it is used by pedestrians.

When a project as significant and large the M6 stage 1 Motorway is approved for construction, it typically includes significant works to improve local facilities in an attempt to compensate for the major impacts that occur during a five-year construction program. However, when you compare what our area has been offered via the M6 project, to what has been offered to other areas like the inner west and north shore, it is very clear that the state government considers us, in our local community to be second class citizens – happy to accept the bare minimum improvements suggested by people that are incredibly out of touch with our area.

Whilst the M6 project has offered ‘new’ sporting facilities, which are wonderful, these are just to replace ones that they are already ripping out due to construction. What are they providing us that we don’t already have? What are they really giving us? Before construction begins, we as a united local community, have an opportunity to put the pressure on, and to ensure we get adequate compensation, equal to that which other municipalities are receiving.

Unfortunately, it is clear that my voice, and 20 others was not enough. If you want to see the above changes implemented to improve our area, please sign this petition. If you want to strengthen our chance of making change, you can also send an email of support 'to whom it may concern' stating that you support (insert the dot points above).  Your email can be sent to ourrockdale@gmail.com

Together we can make a difference and a positive impact to our community that can be enjoyed for generations to come.

For anyone interested in seeing the original submission, please send an email to ourrockdale@gmail.com and I can send it through to you.

Thank you!
