This petition is about fairness and social justice. Aged pensioners are rarely found amongst the rich and elite and are more often members of our society who deserve our support. A society is measured by the way it treats its members and in particular those that need a helping hand. Today's Pensioners have contributed to society financially, physically, and emotionally. They have paid taxes, been valuable members of their local community, often through volunteering their time and skills to assist others, and many have cared for family members while continuing to work. Their decision to give up paid employment is not always an easy one. Many continue to work unpaid as volunteers in areas helping others filling a much needed role at no cost to the community.
Governments need to balance their budgets but it seems that the poorer and those in the most need are often asked to make the greater sacrifices. According to an article in the Sydney Morning Herald $40 million a year is spent on the Federal Politicians Superannuation benefits. Also, several retired politicians are entitled to a Gold Travel card giving them 10 Business Class trips each year. A number of politicians go on to take up other careers when they retire from their parliamentary duties where they earn an income and still receive the parliamentary pension.
This petition calls upon the Federal Government to have a social conscience and minimise their own benefits to help with the fiscal improvements to the budget that they say are necessary.
