A call on Minister Bheki Cele to address South Africa’s DNA backlog NOW!

At 1,000 signatures, this petition is more likely to be featured in recommendations!

In South Africa, at the moment, there are more 200 000 outstanding DNA result backlogs in forensic science laboratory services.

This state of affairs is completely unacceptable, as it compromises the criminal justice system severely – denying and delaying justice for victims of crime and their families.

By Minister Bheki Cele’s own admission, this crisis was brought about by a shortage of consumables and poor contract management in SAPS. The list of problems is probably much longer.

This petition serves to call on Minister Cele to sort this mess out, immediately, alternatively to resign. The tax-paying citizens and those affected by crime (which the government, by a lack of political will, cannot curb) deserve much better.

As things stand now, it constitutes a violation of human rights. Let's all care about this dire situation and stand together against it. Because tomorrow you may just be on the wrong side of this mess.
