AMEND BILL 7 AND KEEP LANGUAGE STUDENTS SAFE
The BC government has voted on legislation that will jeopardize the safety of international language students. The international education sector has a proud history in BC and is our fourth largest export. It builds lasting and positive relationships with citizens from around the globe and showcases BC as the welcoming and vibrant place it is. The 53,000 international language students that come to BC’s accredited language programs contribute not only to the programs they attend, but also millions of dollars to the local economy, including the tourism sector and the thousands of BC families that welcome them into their homes. 30% of them choose to stay in BC and pursue post-secondary education and are even vital to BC’s labour market once they have completed their studies. We owe them high-quality education and protection from unscrupulous operators.
The legislation as passed, allows non-accredited and unregulated language programs to operate freely, and penalizes legitimate and accredited language programs by imposing more red tape and unnecessary costs.
Let Minister Wilkinson know that this situation is unacceptable by signing this petition, and ask him to amend the legislation to recognize language education as a separate sector and extend protection to all international language students.
ALL PRIVATE SECTOR LANGUAGE PROGRAMS IN BC SHOULD BE REGISTERED AND ACCREDITED AND PART OF A QUALITY ASSURANCE SCHEME THAT INCLUDES STUDENT PROTECTION.
