Parents want an English High School in Rivière-des-Prairies

Recently, the Ministre de l'Éducation et de l'Enseignement supérieur , Jean-François Roberge, instructed the English Montreal School Board (EMSB) to hand over classroom space to a neighboring French language school board, the Commission Scolaire de la Pointe-de-'île (CSPI). French language public schools in the east-end of Montreal have exceeded capacity and are in dire need of space to accommodate several thousand students as early as September 2019.

Through official letters sent to the English Montreal School Board by the Ministre de l'Éducation et de l'Enseignement supérieur, M. Jean-François Roberge has suggested the EMSB examine the majority of their elementary and high schools in the area to accommodate the large influx of students at the French school board. The communications have been made public via several news outlets.

As much as Minister Roberge wants to give space in EMSB schools to the French school board to serve their growing needs, then the Minister should also address the needs of English Montreal School Board students and parents in Rivière-des-Prairies.

The EMSB currently has three English language elementary schools that provide service to close to 1400 Anglophone students, and yet there is no English language high school in Rivière-des-Prairies.  These students must travel to Montréal-North, Saint-Léonard or Rosemont for their high school education with travel times that range between 45  minutes to 1 hour and 40 minutes.

Local English Montreal School Board commissioners, past and present, have supported the idea of a high school in Rivière-des-Prairies that  would service the three English Elementary schools within the borough.

We call on our local EMSB school commissioners, provincial representatives and the entire EMSB to support the community`s petition: that M. Jean-François Roberge, Québec Minister of Education, build an English language public high school in the borough of  Rivière-des-Praries or give the EMSB a building to service the needs of English Montreal School Board students that live in Riviere-des-Prairies.

If he is truly the Education Minister for all of Québec, then while he is addressing the needs of the French language school board, he can address the needs of the English Montreal School Board and the parents within the borough of Rivière-des-Prairies.

Please sign this petition if you believe that the Anglophone students of Rivière-des-Prairies deserve an English language public high school within their community.
