Quinn Wedel started this petition to Milwaukee County Board of Supervisors and

Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley and Board of Directors,

The Milwaukee County Parking Enforcement and laws that it follows has led to a demise in what makes Milwaukee County a great county to visit and to live in. Milwaukee County’s ‘No overnight parking’ regulation shows that our local government can create and enforce laws with no pragmatic or logistical purpose behind it. When hollow laws are coupled with a moderate financial penalty, our great county is hurting only those without the financial resources to cover these penalties. As many know, countless homes in Milwaukee County don’t have access to the overly expensive off-street parking. This means that this underserved portion of the community must resort to parking on the streets, overnight. Milwaukee County’s futile ‘No overnight parking’ regulation is a cancer that eats at the minimal financial resources of the already impoverished communities. Milwaukee’s ‘No overnight parking’ regulation affects those who work busily overnight. Many businesses in Milwaukee don’t have parking lots, forcing overnight employees to park on the streets. If a minimum wage overnight employee receives a $20 overnight parking citation, they lose almost three hours worth of work. Milwaukee’s ‘No overnight parking’ regulation unfairly targets college students around Milwaukee County. Tens of thousands of college students around Milwaukee County are faced with a choice: Go into more debt for expensive off-street parking or use the literal thousands of ‘free’ street spaces each night. There is no pragmatic purpose for Milwaukee’s ‘No overnight parking’ regulation, other than as a tactic for Milwaukee County to collect additional revenue from the citizens.  The ability to purchase overnight parking permits from Milwaukee County reveals that there is no logistical problem to cars parked on the streets overnight, but rather that the ‘No overnight parking’ regulation is strictly a source of revenue for Milwaukee County.  The fact is, most people have received a citation from the Milwaukee County Parking Enforcement, however the impacts of the citations are only felt by those with limited financial resources. The consequences of Milwaukee's ‘No overnight parking’ regulation are felt by the impoverished, who frequently live paycheck-to-paycheck. The consequences of Milwaukee’s ‘No overnight parking’ regulation are felt by Milwaukee’s overnight laborers, who work hard only to have their money taken from them. The consequences of Milwaukee’s ‘No overnight parking’ are felt by the tens of thousands of college students, who will already be in debilitating debt. Milwaukee County’s ‘No overnight parking’ was created with the purpose to bring in revenue, however, as a consequence it has led to the persistence of poverty in Milwaukee.

With Concern and Urgency,

The People of Milwaukee County
