Mr. Michael Merrick is a new English teacher at Milpitas High School. During his short employment, he has managed to make our experience as students quite lousy. To date, here are examples of his unsavory teaching tactics:

• Immensely unclear or incoherent with the various assessments and assignments within his course of teaching (When he is unclear with assignments(which he always is), he expects us to know exactly what he is trying to explain. If we are unsure or confused and we ask other people, they are most likely to be confused as well. We then get in trouble for communicating to others while we're supposed to be silent. It is very difficult to follow through with the work when we are unsure. It also makes it very tough to focus when we don't know what the assignment really is)
• Graded unfairly (gives a late penalty to absent students; gives students different scores to similar/relevant assignments)
• Uses a pampering like method in terms of comprehension and reading when most unneeded (continuously pauses the audio book to explain the most obvious things) 
• Refuses to consider the constructive tips and recommendations that have been offered (his mentor teacher has sat with him, but he doesn't implement what was advised) 
• Loses student's assignments and makes them redo it (takes points off "for it being late" even if it's his fault. He is heavily unorganized)
• Communication is terrible when needed (he often chooses not to communicate and share makeup work for with students with excused absences. If he elects to share the makeup work, he's not very forgiving grade-wise)
• Confuses student assignments with other student's since the schoolwork is all paper-driven (he elects to not use Google classroom or other school systems. He is not up to date with current school technology that everyone is accustomed to)
• Micro-manages his class excessively and exclusively (he literally 'picks on' the same specific students in class. It's obvious and repetitive. One of the many things he proceeds to do is, hush the students by name even if everyone in the classroom is talking. He does it harshly and abruptly; it is very demeaning and upsetting.)
• Fails to abide to district COVID-19 safety protocols and doesn't respect personal space especially during a pandemic (his face mask is always worn below nose and gets angry when reminded. He also makes students uncomfortable with his scarce distance)
• Loss of temper over littlest things and acts upon it. (Takes everything personal. "Is that a tone that I hear?" This occurs to few students, as they are the same ones he "micro-manages" point 8. He is usually avidly incorrect.)

This petition has no malicious intent. We, as students, do not want him terminated. We are asking him to simply adopt the standard teaching practices, behaviors and etiquette as the MHS faculty. If Mr. Merrick refuses to change his poor behavior after these following measures have been communicated, then we will most definitely re-escalate our concerns, but request a more resolute outcome such as disciplinary actions or even termination.
