The core strength in developing the economy of a country like India is depend on Agriculture, and if we look at the census almost 40% farmer's suicides has taken place last year. The report says around 12000 farmer suicides for 2016.
one Indian farmer commits suicide every 30 minutes, due to a number of reasons including inadequate prices at the market, lack of government support, an extremely low government MSP (Minimum support price) and the vicious spiral of private money lenders and loans that the farmer is unable to pay back due to the above.
In 2014, the National Crime Records Bureau of India reported 5,650 farmer suicides, however reports from farmers indicate that the actual figure is much higher. The highest number of farmer suicides were recorded in 2004 when 18,241 farmers committed suicide. The farmers suicide rate in India has ranged between 1.4 and 1.8 per 100,000 total population, over a 10-year period through 2005.India is an agrarian country with around 70% of its people depending directly or indirectly upon agriculture. As of 2016, this figure has reduced to 59.9% being farmers as the younger generation has been abandoning farming due to poor earnings and coming to cities seeking employment, thus putting further pressue on cities. Farmer suicides account for 11.2% of all suicides in India and the rate of suicides among Indian farmers is 40% higher than the national average.Activists and scholars have offered a number of reasons for farmer suicides, the most prominent being meteorological factors such as failure of monsoons, unseasonal rains and hail that can destroy crops, high debt burdens, detrimental government policies, lack of irrigation and the lowering / poisoning of ground water, high costs of seeds (seed monopolies) and high rates of interest charged by private money lenders.
