The Mikisew Cree First Nation (MCFN) Customary Election Regulation clearly states, “The term of office of the Chief & Council shall be three (3) years…” [section 3.2 Term of Office] therefore the current Chief & Council term ends on June 20, 2020;

The Government of Canada recommends that First Nations delay spring elections due to the Covid-19 virus however it is also the position of the Government of Canada to not interfere with First Nation Customary Elections; especially when safety precautions are put in place to protect against the Covid-19 virus;

This current MCFN Chief & Council have not been governed with the duly elected Chief and six (6) Councilors for half of the 2017-2020 term;

It is necessary to have an election on June 20, 2020 to provide a full governing body for the MCFN membership;

Covid-19 virus is not a valid reason to postpone the June 20, 2020 election because safeguards can be put in place to protect members health while they exercise their democratic right to vote.

Therefore, MCFN Members demand:

  1. A MCFN Chief & Council Election is held by June 20, 2020.
  2. The Electoral Officer ensures that guidelines and practices are put in place to protect against the Covid-19 virus in all aspects of the Chief & Council Election.
  3. Mail-in ballots be mailed to all on and off-reserve voting members so they can vote well in advance of election day and safely from the Covid-19 virus.
  4. Voting polling stations be available for members who want to vote in-person at the customary MCFN locations along with safety elements to ensure protection from the Covid-19 virus.
