Dear Neighbors -

Now is the time for action. In three short years, the Peckman River has flooded twice. Thus far efforts to avoid and mitigate flood damage have been non-existent by our local and state officials. ‘Unprecedented’ flooding events are regularly happening every year in Cedar Grove and neighboring towns along the Peckman and other Essex county rivers. Our community demands action to address these flooding concerns that deeply affect our families, property and safety.

Proper river maintenance is a key component to effectively manage rain water waste. For example, river dredging, checking the sewer and drainage systems for clogging, and clearing debris on a regular basis are simple steps that our township can take (or has been ineffectively taking) to secure the safety of all of us. Recently, the Peckman River Basin Flood Risk Management project was approved by Congress to be funded back in 2020, due in large part to the efforts of Congresswoman Mikie Sherril and former Congressman Bill Pascrell Jr. Despite their efforts, incredibly, nothing was done.

Our homes are at stake. Our Cedar Grove property values are at stake. Our finances are at stake. Our families and children are doubly at STAKE! Why are we risking the safety of anyone in Cedar Grove from being washed away in these unpredictable flood waters that otherwise could be mitigated? What else needs to happen before serious action is taken?

Please join us and sign the petition to demand action and a response. If we band together and form a collective voice, we will begin to see progress. We should not have to be fearful of life and property every time it rains in Cedar Grove.
