Mike's Music has been a fixture in the Fond du Lac community for several decades. For many Fond du Lac musicians it has been the ONLY place to get musical equipment or take lessons. The business has helped to launch countless budding musicians from all genres.
The outside of Mike's Music is easily identifiable by the large mural on the side of the building depicting famous musicians including The Beatles, Bob Dylan, Eric Clapton, Janis Joplin and many others. There is even a local music legend included with the greats. Ray Wifler who directed the Fond du Lac Symphonic Band is depicted among the others and peers down N. Main Street with the likes of Frank Sinatra and Mick Jagger.
The mural gives hope to those wanting to get into music by showing that anyone can achieve greatness through hard work and dedication. It makes sense to include and celebrate our local heroes along with those known around the world. There is one local music legend who has been on the minds of many as of late since passing away in 2019 at the age of 43. Like Mike’s Music, Opy Schwefel was a staple in the Fond du Lac music scene for over 20 years , performing in 6 different bands over that time span and mentoring countless others.
Opy should be included in the "Wall of Fame" at Mike's Music to celebrate the tremendous impact he had on the Fond du Lac scene and the work he put in to mentoring young musicians. Let's celebrate our local music heroes!
We are hOPing that the fine folks at Mike’s Music will see the benefit in honoring Opy by including his image or an image inspired by him on the wall of fame. If we can get the buy in, we will start a campaign to raise funds to pay for the project. Opy should be celebrated.
