On Sunday, June 28th, Mark and Patricia McCloskey, a St. Louis couple, openly brandished weapons at their home, Mark displaying a semiautomatic rifle as protesters en route to the mayor’s home approached nearby. Meanwhile, Patricia, who was a few feet away, was seen pointing a pistol at the crowd, her finger directly on the trigger. The couple initially tried to distance themselves from any attention they may have garnered through the incident, disconnecting their phones, boarding up their personal injury law office and taking down their office's website. However, when Mr. McCloskey gave his side of the story, he defended their actions and framed the protesters as a violent mob of “terrorists” who stormed through a gate leading to the private street outside their home, making him and Patricia fear for their lives. He went on to equate the incident to "the storming of the Bastille," a completely inappropriate comparison given that protestors were not even intending to go to the couple's home and rather they were going to the home of St. Louis mayor Lyda Krewson.

The fact that there was no action taken against the couple again displays the disgustingly blatant double standards that exist in our judicial system. In November 2014, a 12-year-old Tamir Rice was killed by police for having a toy gun. In fact, the person who called the cops on Tamir Rice noted that he didn't feel like the gun was actually real. On the other hand, Patricia McCloskey, a 61-year-old woman, pulled a gun on passing protestors WITH HER FINGER ON THE TRIGGER AND INTENT ON USING THE GUN, but is still able to practice law, sits on the Missouri Bar Association's ethics panel, and showed no remorse when asked about it, saying "I'd do it again." Despite practicing law, Mark and Patricia McCloskey clearly showed why injustice can propagate in our country-the law caters to the wealthy white population of America, like them. Their 1st and 2nd Amendment are theirs to use, but not Black Lives Matter's. This incident has clearly exposed how people like Patricia McCloskey can sit in positions of power and enable racial injustice to continue to exist in our country. Missouri Governor Mike Parson and President Amanda Tollison, remove the licenses of Mark and Patricia McCloskey and remove Patricia McCloskey from the ethics board of the Missouri Bar Association- not only do hateful people like these two have no place in our community, but people like Mrs. McCloskey cannot be expected to know ethics when they themselves are willing to go to such extreme measures for no reasons. Hate has no place in our community, especially at a time where unity is needed, and suspending the licenses of the McCloskeys will ensure that this message is clear to everyone.
