Mr. Morath,

As parents of school-age children, we know the last few months have been extremely difficult on them. We have watched our children and their peers struggle to adapt to online learning due to Covid-19. We have watched them struggle emotionally both from missing their friends and from trying to understand the turmoil of the world we now live in.

As much as we hope that the next school year will resume as normal, we all know it will not. Channelview, Texas, for example, has made it public that the most in-person instruction those children will receive is two days per week. Districts across the state are being forced to make similar decisions due to rampant Covid-19 infections, especially among hard hit areas like Houston and Dallas. Even districts that are able to have students in the classroom full time will have their learning disrupted by learning to wear PPE during class and practicing social distancing, not to mention schools may be forced to temporarily close if a student becomes infected.

Asking the children to take the STAAR test this year is just another burden their tender hearts do not need. Teachers will already be overburdened trying to teach in what we all must realistically assume will not be a normal school year. I implore you to reconsider your decision to administer the STAAR test for the 2020/2021 school year, just as you made the decision to not administrator it this past school year. Things in Texas have not improved. The scores will reflect this.

Many parents struggled last year to teach their children at home between jobs and illness. In some rural areas, many do not even have access to high speed internet. The normal standard of learning was not achieved during the last part of the 2020 school year. We must be realistic. Next year will be a mix of making up for the educational loss of this last semester and the trial of dealing with a still ongoing pandemic.

We need to be focused on leading our children as they adjust to this new education environment, rather than test scores. Our children need leaders who have compassion on their mental health. They need leaders who will stand up for them. They need leaders who take their best interest to heart. They need leaders who will foster the whole child rather than a test score. Please, be that leader.

Sincerely,
Texas Parents
