Stop NCTD from Constructing Train Fence in 2020 on Del Mar Bluffs and in North County

The North County Transit District (NCTD), which controls the train tracks, is at it again. In 2018, they proposed projects to build miles of fencing along the tracks in Del Mar, Encinitas, and Oceanside. But a group of elected officials and thousands of residents organized to defeat it.

On August 28, 2020, the NCTD requested a federal “declaratory order” to prevent local input on what it does with the tracks, including its proposed fencing projects. This would give the NCTD veto authority over objections from Del Mar or any other city. The NCTD wants to start the Del Mar project this fall, which would include up to 7,290 feet of fencing. The fencing projects in Encinitas and Oceanside will be sure to quickly follow.

This will be a great loss for the entire community—cutting off beach access for thousands of people, ruining the landscape, and creating safety risk for anyone caught inside the fence.

The pandemic has been tough on everyone, but the beach has been an important source of relief during these stressful times. Limiting access is unacceptable.
