North Haven plans to install artificial turf made with crumb rubber (shredded tires) at the middle school this summer. Crumb rubber contains known carcinogens, and many other toxic substances which have not been well studied and are likely hazardous to kids and the environment. It can also reach very high temperatures which can lead to heat stroke. Many municipalities around the country have placed a moratorium on crumb rubber and there was recently a proposed ban in the CT state legislature.
All middle school students will be expected to play on these fields, in addition to countless other children on recreational town sports teams. We do not want OUR CHILDREN to be exposed to such potentially hazardous substances on a daily basis.
Many scientists, pediatricians and public health experts have urged a moratorium on crumb rubber. A group of such experts from The Children's Environmental Health Center at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine wrote in their testimony to the CT State Legislature in 2016, " In the absence of convincing evidence of safety, we recommend that children not play on recycled rubber surfaces that contain known carcinogens and neurotoxins and support a ban on the use of these products." At Yale, Dr. Vasiliou, Chair of the Dept of Environmental Health Sciences at the School of Public Health, wrote a letter against installing crumb rubber in North Haven. He wrote, "If athletics clubs like Ajax in the Netherlands remove the crumb rubber field for their facilities for health concerns, why should we consider installing them."
On top of the health concerns, North Haven CAN NOT AFFORD these fields which will cost $2 million to install and $800,000 to replace every 10 years. While millions of bond money are funneled to these fields, other important facilities such as the track remain in disrepair, with no money left to repair them.
We ask that North Haven immediately halt plans to install crumb rubber turf. We ask instead that safer alternatives such as cork turf or well maintained grass fields be installed at the middle school. Grass fields, if properly constructed and maintained can be beautiful , safe, and playable and could save our town a significant amount of money.
