Midtown Residents Demand Public Safety Transparency for Abandoned High-Rise and Crane

Midtown Residents Demand Public Safety Transparency for Abandoned High-Rise and Crane
The Issue
The abandoned high-rise construction site at Peachtree Street and 14th Street in Midtown Atlanta, including the long-idle tower crane and exposed structure, has remained a visible concern for years in the center of one of Atlanta’s busiest and most densely populated districts.
This area is surrounded by:
- Residential towers
- Hotels
- Office buildings
- Restaurants and retail
- Heavy pedestrian traffic
- Daily commuters and visitors
Midtown Residents want transparency regarding the condition of the site, crane inspections, ongoing maintenance, inspections, engineering oversight, and long-term plans. Our concerns have now escalated as the City of Atlanta has posted notices identifying the property as unsafe. For more than five years, Midtown residents have lived beneath a long-idle crane towering over our homes and community.
Midtown residents want confidence that the crane and surrounding structure have been properly evaluated and that our homes, families, and community are protected. City authorities have determined the site requires public warning and restricted access, and project permits have expired.
We respectfully call for City and County Representatives to provide:
- Public disclosure of inspection status and corrective actions.
Provide available information regarding inspections, violations, remediation efforts, engineering reviews, maintenance records, and compliance requirements. Residents request documented assurance regarding the condition, maintenance, and structural review of the long-idle crane and unfinished structure. - Independent review of long-term site conditions where appropriate.
Given the duration of inactivity, the site’s central Midtown location, and the City of Atlanta’s unsafe designation, residents request confirmation that all necessary reviews and evaluations have occurred. - A public timeline for stabilization, remediation, redevelopment, or removal activities.
The community deserves clear information regarding next steps. If inspections determine that the crane or structure cannot be safely maintained, an appropriate removal or remediation plan should be implemented. - Ongoing communication with residents, businesses, workers, and nearby property owners.
Silence creates uncertainty. Regular updates create confidence and trust. - Evaluation of resident protections and risk mitigation measures.
Residents request review of available protections, including swing easements, insurance transparency, and liability coverage for property owners affected by the spinning crane. - Immediate repair and restoration of roads, sidewalks, and pedestrian access routes surrounding the property including the north sidewalk on 13th Street between Peachtree and Juniper Streets, which has been closed to pedestrians for almost 5 years.
Damaged sidewalks and deteriorated pedestrian areas have created ongoing accessibility and safety concerns and have limited safe passage for residents, visitors, and individuals using wheelchairs and other mobility devices.
The goal of this petition is simple:
Answers. Transparency. Accountability. Action.
