I never knew that homelessness was a problem until I came to LA and experienced it first hand! Apparently there are 54000 documented homeless people in the city of Los Angeles. There are at least another 50000 undocumented individuals who share the streets with them. I used to drive by that guy with the sign that says I work for food, and I always wondered why he didn't just get a job. Now I know it's not just that easy sometimes! Here's the problem, the resources, and the monies put into these resources are being misappropriated in some way or another. You have the individual who has been on the street for years and has chosen to live this way. This individual has ended at the bottom one way or another, and has ended up choosing to stay there. Then there are the people who by some series of unfortunate events have ended up stranded and broke on the streets. These people landed homeless because of some tragedy or another. Floods forest fires hurricanes whatever it may be. Getting laid off of work losing a job in one way or another. These are things that happen every day, acts of God really and there is no way to escape them sometimes. Unfortunately for the latter the other guys who have chosen to be on the streets for years are gobbling up the resources that the new people need. It is hard for people who have just fallen on the streets to get any help at all sometimes. When you have to sleep outside there are things that you may need such as a blanket because it is very cold, you may know someone in the area that can help you or you may be in an area where you know no one at all. If this is the case and you know no one in the area it is hard to get something like a blanket, and at night the elements can drive you to a lack of sleep and sometimes insanity. There are drugs all over the streets, and alcohol. Sometimes these are the only comfort for someone without anything. Even the people who are trying to make it off the streets have to deal with these elements on a daily basis. Being faced with these monsters sometimes even the strongest people can cave in. I'm asking everyone who reads this or who knows anyone on the street or who may be on the street to sign this petition so we can eradicate homelessness. I propose a National Homelessness Day, this would be a day where communities everywhere pool their resources together, churches, libraries, businesses, homeless shelters, anybody who is willing to help public School systems colleges, anyone with a heart and a hope to see a better America. Homeless people gather at public libraries, it seems to be a safe haven 4 the homeless. It is one of the only public places still left where people can actually go in and not be bothered. It is a shame because when you're homeless you pretty much cannot go anywhere without being looked at with a condescending glare. Please remember the next time you see a homeless person oh, you never know how they fell on these hard times and if you can do anything to help them please reach out your hand. Let's get together and make September 6th National Homeless Ness Day!
