Tell elected officials to fix Flint and make Michigan unleaded

In April 2014, Flint, Mich., was hit with one of the most devastating cases of water contamination our country has ever seen. At that time, state appointed officials authorized switching the city’s water source to the highly corrosive Flint River in an effort to save money. As the river water caused lead from aging pipes to leach into the water supply, thousands of Flint residents unknowingly consumed contaminated water. This negligent decision-making has left at least ten dead and countless children suffering from severe, irreparable health issues. The people of Flint have been forced to deal with this tragedy for the past three years, and their fight is far from over.
This devastating crisis highlights the major problems surrounding our state’s aging water infrastructure. Very few cities have taken steps to address outdated service lines even as many municipal water systems are on the verge of failure. Michigan is estimated to have more lead service lines than any other state in the nation, and we cannot turn a blind eye. What happened in Flint can happen anywhere.
The way the Flint Water Crisis is handled will set a precedent for how other cities and states address water contamination issues in the future. As all eyes are on Flint, we must hold the elected officials responsible for taking the action necessary to restore clean, safe water to the city, while encouraging other communities to proactively seek solutions to their aging water infrastructures before catastrophe strikes.
We are on a mission to fix Flint and make Michigan Unleaded, but we need your help.
By signing this petition, you are letting our state’s elected officials know we are concerned with water infrastructure. Let’s bring clean water back to Flint and make sure this crisis is never repeated in our state.
