Like many other universities, Michigan State University has decided to transition courses to being completely online due to the Covid-19 pandemic. However, this change has not been reflected in the cost of tuition.

In 2013, over 200 universities in North America took part in a survey created by WCET, and the results concluded that course completion rates were 3-5% higher during in-person learning compared with online courses. Online education lacks many significant qualities of in-person learning such as face-to-face communication, hands-on learning, labwork, and in-person collaboration with other students. Furthermore, there are fewer distractions in the classroom compared with a home environment. Overall, online education is not worth the cost of full tuition because it provides a substandard learning experience.

Because of Covid-19, Michigan State University has closed most of campus, closed many dining halls, suspended fall athletics, suspended student events, and canceled concerts, presumably resulting in lower operational costs for the university. These lower operational costs are NOT reflected in the cost of tuition. However, students are still expected to pay full tuition.

Michigan State University must adjust tuition because of the lower quality of education and lower operational costs.
