Condemn Hate Crime Attack on Jewish Student
This petition had 524 supporters
Jewish student Zach Tennen was the victim of a hate crime at a party near campus on Sunday August 26. Two men approached him and asked if he was Jewish. After answering that he was, the two men proceeded to give a Nazi salute and then brutally attack him, shouting anti-Semitic racial slurs while beating him repeatedly. After Zach went unconscious the assailants stapled his mouth shut. Partygoers watched the entire assault occur and only after the attackers were finished did they call a cab for Zach to take him to the hospital.
The University's media team has said it will work with Zach to make sure he can finish his academic requirements, but no University official has publicly condemned the attack or anti-Semitic hate crimes, nor have they made any statements in support of the student. Compare this to the Compton Cookout that took place among students from UC San Diego in 2010. This event took place off campus and was non-violent, and it was immediately condemned by University officials as racist. Had Zach been black or Muslim, would the University remain silent?
