Heading into the 2020-21 season, the Michigan State University Men's and Women's Swimming and Diving teams were primed for success. Many of MSU’s best and brightest student-athletes, including U.S. Olympic Trial and U.S. Open qualifiers, All-Americans and Academic All-Americans, gathered to begin training. It would be the 51st year for the women's program, and the 99th season for the men's, with preparations underway to celebrate a century of Spartan Swimming and Diving.

Just a month later, that legacy was destroyed.

On Oct. 22, MSU Athletic Director Bill Beekman announced this would be the final season for Men's and Women's Swimming and Diving. Spartan swimming and diving alumni, team members, and families quickly mobilized, securing thousands of social media followers, speaking to the Board of Trustees, and writing letters to Beekman and MSU President Samuel Stanley - all seeking the "why" for this disastrous decision. Citing budget constraints, then inadequate facilities, then lack of competitiveness, Beekman's reasoning shifted and strained under scrutiny.

After digging into the data, we have concluded their responses don't hold water. MSU’s budget shortfall is not as bad as projected, the I.M. West facilities are NCAA regulation despite repeated false claims, and the Spartan swimmers and divers rack up academic and athletic accolades year after year after year. And right after Thanksgiving, it was revealed they have been planning a nearly $1 billion athletic facilities project. MSU Swimming and Diving costs just 0.2% of that proposed budget.

This decision needs to be reversed. MSU must work with us to establish a sustainable funding solution, not only to resurrect the Swimming and Diving program, but also to prevent other Spartan sports from suffering the same fate.

Please join us in asking Dr. Stanley, Mr. Beekman, and the MSU Board of Trustees to reinstate Spartan Swimming and Diving. Together we can build a future for ALL student athletes at Michigan State. Together we are #SpartanStrong. Go Green!
