A Student started this petition to Michigan State Univeristy

With the first week of classes complete, students have received syllabi for their respective courses. Overwhelmingly, these classes are now requiring students to purchase online subscriptions costing up to $150 to access assignments that are to be graded. In other words, many MSU courses are forcing students to pay to do coursework through an outside company; that's $150 for each class that requires a one semester subscription to complete assignments. It begs the question, what is MSU getting out of promoting the sale of these expensive services?

Depriving students of the opportunity to shop around to find competitive prices for textbooks is extremely frustrating for us budget-conscious shoppers. In addition, there is no potential for making any money back by reselling the material, as the access codes required are only good for a one time use.

MSU already has the online resources to provide students with ways to complete assignments free of charge, for example, by utilizing D2L, which has proved to be useful and effective in the past.

It comes down to this: Michigan State University is overwhelmingly supporting the push for a more exorbient and undesired approach at purchasing textbooks despite the more economical and flexible options that exist.
