In the state of Michigan, cannabis has been legal since November 2018 in users 21 years of age and up. Yet since then, there are no laws protecting cannabis users from discrimination from employers for using this now legal substance. An employee can drink a fifth of vodka and be addicted to painkillers every night and maintain a job. Meanwhile, a cannabis user who smokes a bowl to combat anxiety or depression, to help with sleeping, or just because it’s fun can be tested for and denied a job. I’m not sure it’s possible for me to overstate the hypocrisy in this situation. I call on the Michigan government to take steps to protect legal cannabis users, medicinal and recreational alike, from discrimination in jobs, barring special situations such as operating heavy machinery. Passing this protection would help make our state a more equal place for everyone, and help a wider array of people make ends meet.
