I am a young queer transgender person living in Michigan; I deserve to be included in our state's anti-discrimination policies. Being trans* and/or queer in any capacity can be a daunting and scary experience, let alone in a state with conservative-majorities both in the government and in the population. Every day I walk out my door, I have the nagging worry that I might not come home safe or possibly at all. I will use my voice to speak out against injustices for not only myself and my fellow LGBTQ+ individuals, but for those who no longer can.

The Senate version of this bill was proposed a day before a transphobic bill targeting transgender student athletes was proposed by Sen. Lana Theis. The irony of these bill existing at the same time, each sitting in a committee awaiting further support, is not lost on me- in fact, it scares me. The fact that my government has the power to either acknowledge my existence as contributing member of society that is allowed the same civil protections as others OR will try to place mine and other's existence on a sublevel of humanity, pushing us out of spaces that we have every right to. That is why I ask both the Michigan State House and Senate to pass this bill that would include gender identity and sexual orientation as protected categories under the Elliott-Larsen Civil Rights Act. Show me and every other member of the LGBTQ+ community in Michigan that you hear us and you see us for what we are: human.
