Roger Sno started this petition to Michigan Secretary of State, Jocelyn Benson

If you are a resident in the state of Michigan, you've most likely noticed that the Secretary of State has decided for us that their services, will now be conducted by appointment only. We never voted on this or were given a say in the matter but we are expected to accept it whether we like it or not. I fully disagree with this decision and I know I am not the only resident of Michigan who feels this way. The appointment structure that was set in place was acceptable during the pandemic but as more and more people have been vaccinated and the number of covid cases decrease on the daily, it is time to return services back to normal operations.

The appointment structure comes with many problems of it's own and one could argue that it is racist and ageist to assume that everyone has access to the internet and the know-how to setup an appointment online. There are people who work Monday-Friday and are unable to just drop a days pay to make it to an appointment to get their tabs renewed or to get a new vehicle registered all together. Many older folks like my parents, are computer illiterate and rely on someone like a child or grandchild to help assist but not everyone has a person they can rely on to get appointments scheduled online. Sure there are kiosks in some stores but the majority of those machines mentioned, do not accept cash payment and some residents of Michigan do not have a credit or debit card to pay with not to mention these machines also charge unnecessary processing fees in addition to the registration fees we already pay.

As a result of the "by appointment only" structure, we are seeing an alarming rate of vehicles with no plate at all, some that have the date of their appointment posted on the back of their vehicle so the police will give them a pass. This is dangerous because chances are these vehicles are operating uninsured/unregistered and pose a threat to other drivers. But what are you to do if you have to get to work and you can't register a vehicle from a private owner that you had just purchased because your appointment at SOS is weeks to months out? Driving an unregistered vehicle will result in tickets and fines which will put someone who is financially struggling even further behind. These unintended consequences will hurt the poorest communities, often times people of color, the hardest.

The solution is simple, restore walk in services to all Secretary of State locations across the state of Michigan. So if you agree and feel that the negative consequences of the "appointment only" model outweigh the positive, please sign this petition and call on the Michigan government to restore Secretary of State to normal walk-in operations as they always have been pre-pandemic. We the tax payers have a right to have access to services we are required to pay on our terms not weeks to months after an appointment is available. Please sign this petition today and make your voice heard!
