Tracy Theobald started this petition to Michigan’s Governor Gretchen Whitmer and

How many pedestrians need to die, while crossing a road in the dark, until the responsibility of safety is placed back in the hands of the PEDESTRIAN?  Have you ever seen a person wearing an ANSI ll or lll jacket (or vest) at night?  You would know if you had...because you can see the two-inch reflective strips, on these garments, at least a quarter mile ahead of you... giving you plenty of time to respond accordingly!  Don’t just take my word for it...buy a vest, put it on, walk into the dark, then have someone take a picture with their phone/camera (with flash on). What you see might amaze you.

I believe that many are simply unaware...and I pray this bring awareness as well as a potentially simple, and inexpensive, solution.  The majority of pedestrians (after talking with several pedestrians) really don’t know just how invisible they are!  As a driver (and no one is more pedestrian-conscientious than I),  I can’t tell you how many close calls I have had!  I seek to protect pedestrians and drivers alike.  I, personally, don’t know anyone who would intentionally hit a pedestrian with their vehicle!  But for those drivers who have, accidentally, hit a pedestrian... I suspect it’s a tragedy that  remains with them for life.  Sad to me, however, to see a driver thrown into a jail cell when his only true crime was driving to work before the sun was up.  A human being, in the dark, is just as hard to see as a deer (and a deer has reflective eyes).  If a pedestrian is hit WHILE wearing ANSI ll approved gear, then you could consider filing charges against the driver.  Ever watch Live PD on tv?  Note the departments that wear reflective gear... they’re easy to see!  Police, fire/rescue, and paramedics should all be required to wear reflective gear!

I attended the funeral of a co-worker’s daughter.  She was a bright 14 year old girl with big dreams and a bright future.  She said goodbye to her Mom before running out to her school bus.  The car never saw the girl...and the mother never saw her daughter, alive, again.  My heart continues to break for both the family of 14 yr old, as well as for the driver that took her life on that dark morning.

Please help bring awareness, or even create laws, to protect pedestrians and drivers!  Every single week, in the news, I see another report of a pedestrian that has been hit and killed.  Research ANSI ll ... and please consider arming your children with this light-weight piece of safety equipment before they head out to their bus, or walk to school.

I would encourage all manufactures of kids coats/jackets to include these unmistakeable reflective strips.  Which of the two, in the photo, are you most likely to see first... while driving in the dark?
