Ban the Use of Rubber Bullets at Peaceful Protests
Ban the Use of Rubber Bullets at Peaceful Protests
Why this petition matters

During the BLM protests, cops and other authorities have been known to use rubber bullets to stop protestors from approaching the police officers. Many protestors have been injured by these rubber bullets, which tend to be about the size of a hand.
Rubber bullets have the potential to maim, seriously injure, and even kill people. Dr. Douglas Lazzaro, a professor at NYU Langone Health, stated in an interview with the Los Angeles Times that "When aimed at the legs, rubber bullets can stop a dangerous person or crowd from getting closer to a police officer," but, when shot from a more close range, "rubber bullets can penetrate the skin, break bones, fracture the skull and explode the eyeball." This can lead to brain injuries and many other serious injuries that can be potentially fatal.
Peaceful protestors, such as Adolfo Guzman-Lopez - a journalist who was tasked with reporting the Long Beach protests and got hit with a rubber bullet in the throat, injuring him severely - can't even exercise the right to free speech without having to worry about their personal safety and health, along with the possibility of being arrested or contracting Coronavirus as well. In these times, when the need to unite to protest and bring light to horrible, inhumane, and unjust situations arise, we cannot stand in silence and wait for someone else to fix this for us.
