Create laws enforcing Michigan's breastfeeding laws

Breastfeeding is something every mom should feel comfortable about doing. Michigan state law says: 41.181 Adoption of ordinances by township board.

(4) As used in this section, “public nudity” means knowingly or intentionally displaying in a public place, or for payment or promise of payment by any person including, but not limited to, payment or promise of payment of an admission fee, any individual’s genitals or anus with less than a fully opaque covering, or a female individual’s breast with less than a fully opaque covering of the nipple and areola. Public nudity does not include any of the following:

(a) A woman’s breastfeeding of a baby whether or not the nipple or areola is exposed during or incidental to the feeding.

However, breastfeeding mothers can still be harassed by establishments and the people who work there if others are made uncomfortable. Nursing mothers can be asked to leave or even removed from the place they are nursing in. This is blatant discrimination to nursing mothers. This petition is asking that the state finds a way to enforce these laws so mothers can comfortably breastfeed in public, covered or uncovered, and be protected by laws.

Letter to
Representative Kevin Cotter
We would like to request that the state of Michigan acknowledges breastfeeding as a normal and natural way of nurturing children. We ask that you please create and enforce breastfeeding laws that protect nursing mothers from being refused services or goods, and protects us from being asked to leave an establishment for the sole reason of breastfeeding our child. We also would like for those said breastfeeding laws to be enforced with a possible citation or fine. In addition to those, we would like to encourage you to please schedule a time for House Bill 4733 to be considered in committee. Thank you for your time, and we hope to have your support.
