James Thomas started this petition to Michigan Governor and

Michigan has one of the nation's toughest charges and penalties for Criminal Sexual Conduct. What's more alarming is an alleged victim can report the crime and charges and conviction occur without any physical evidence of the allegations.

This law affects more African American and minorities than any other group, with more harsh charges filed against the minorities. Those who are not minorities are often given pleas to misdemeanor and given the chance to seek none prison paths such as therapy. Even those who are first time offenders stand the chance of anywhere from 0 years to life in prison. This is all based on NO physical evidence but testimony from an alleged victim. There needs to be a halt put on those cases currently in the court system so that all proper procedure and practices are being followed and that those steps are lawful. The accused doesn't have the presumption of innocence in these cases.

Being charged and then convicted without evidence is unfair and the pipeline to prison for black and brown people continues to be outnumber by those who commit violent crimes and those defendants are often given shorter prison terms. There is also strong belief that prosecutors and public defenders or court appointed attorneys are working together in some instances and most defendants are passed through the process and convicted quickly. This is by waiving Preliminary exams and going straight to a plea or trial. Unless you can afford private counsel, those who are low income don't stand a chance of alternative prison chances.

Some action needs to be taken Now so that those who are charged with these crimes are given a second chances to rehabilitate and return to society without prison terms.
