Dominique Shakey started this petition to Representative Michelle Lujan Grisham and

New Mexico's citizen's with severe mental illness are being left on the street or being incarcerated because they do not have anywhere else to go. Many of our citizen's with mental illness find themselves in a revolving door of homelessness, incarceration, and/or being hospitalized. Providing housing for this population is only one piece of the puzzle. I am drawing inspiration from Dementia Village in the Netherlands which serves as a safe community and allows its residents the freedom and quality of life they deserve. We owe it to New Mexico's citizens to take care of all of our neighbors. Mental illness is not a choice nor is it to be criminalized. It is a medical condition much like any other you can visibly see and those who have a mental illness deserve to be treated with dignity and respect. We, as New Mexican's, must provide a secure area in which we can provide housing and various resources such as mock grocery stores, pharmacies, doctors' offices, and recreational activities. Residents with mental illness should not be punished for their condition, but rather nurtured and given the opportunity to live their lives with freedom and security we all desire.
