Rename PNHS football stadium after Pete Schermerhorn

After the 53rd season of Portage Northern football, the team will finally play its first home game. When it was announced that we'd be getting our own stadium, I had many former players and students asking me if it was going to be named after my dad, Pete Schermerhorn. When the name was revealed, I had even more people ask me why it wasn't. I write this not from the perspective of his son, but of a former player. In the 29 seasons before coach Schermerhorn was hired, the team made the playoffs 1 time with an overall record of 128-132-1. In Pete Schermerhorn's 23 seasons as head coach, the team has reached the playoffs 13 times and has an overall record of 119-92. He made winning a part of our culture, and the playoffs more of an expectation than a goal. However it's not just about numbers. He has put more time and effort into this program than anyone else. Even in the offseason it's all football. He holds before and after school workouts in the spring and morning workouts, 7 on 7 scrimmages, and camps all summer long. Any player that's walked into that locker room will tell you that they left it a better man. Coach Schermerhorn has given everything he possibly can to this program, and I think it's time we give back. Sign this petition to help name our future stadium after the man who made it all possible.
