Slavery, as punishment for a crime, is still legal in the United States. That leaves the 2,220,300 incarcerated adults in the US vulnerable to the exploitation of their labor. FGCU supports this system when they use prison labor on the grounds, likely paying the Florida Department of Corrections for it with students’ tuition. Prisoners are hardly compensated for their work, at best $1 an hour for hard labor, at worst not getting paid at all. This petition looks to put an end to the use of prison labor on FGCU’s campus.
