When I walked into Track Coffee for the first time, it was a breath of fresh air....and great coffee - a little nod to East London in our much loved Thameside town. With it's young, driven owner, it's cool, industrial decor, it's fantastic coffee, juices and sandwiches and its super friendly staff, you immediately knew that this is what Marlow had been missing. And yet, less than a year on, Track is gone - a shop front, a trio of dangling industrial bulbs and no doubt some shattered entrepreneurial dreams all that remain. Apparently all because Shanly feels the need to demand 3000 GBP in rental for a space only just large enough to swing a cat in.
It's a complete tragedy that Shanly keep pricing out independents...seemingly determined to homogenise the High Street with retail chains in the name of high returns. You'd think that being from an entrepreneurial background himself and already having 320mn to his name (according to Wikipedia), Michael Shanly might see fit to subsidise rents a little for independents, who are already having to pay set up costs, business rates and employ local staff. Go on Mr and Mrs Shanly - keep something of the spirit that made Marlow a great little place to live alive...please!
