Mattapoisett Concerned started this petition to Michael S. Nelson, Superintendent of Schools, Old Rochester & MA Sup. Union #55 and

A collective group of concerned parents, guardians, and caregivers of Mattapoisett elementary school students have come together to express our shared hardships under a Hybrid Learning Plan and petition request for a shift to full-time in school learning schedule to address the following:

1.     Recovery of lost learning from the last third of the 2019/2020 school year Remote Learning Plan.

2.     Ability to meet current grade level standards of 2020/2021 under the Hybrid Model given the importance of in-person learning for critical developmental milestones of elementary aged children (in particular K – 3).

3.     Unsustainable burden to a majority of families to implement at home learning due to:

a.     Care of multiple children

b.     Work schedule conflicts

c.      Lack of training to teach elementary aged children who lack the ability to work independently

4.     Financial hardships on families having to either reduce or take leave from current employment or pay out-of-pocket expenses for childcare (if you can find any) 3 days per week in addition to their yearly school tax commitments.

This petition formally requests the administration to:

1.     Provide an in person full-time plan, published to the parents/guardians/caregivers of Mattapoisett elementary school students within 10 days of receipt of this petition, in accordance with the Public Records Request Form process in Mattapoisett.

2.     Provide and publish the data points that are to be used in determining the path to a full-time in person learning model, as well as the sources for that data.

3.     Schedule an in-person meeting of administrative officials and school committee members with the collective group of concerned parents/guardians/caregivers to discuss the plan, data and the metrics with both health and town government officials, prior to the next school committee meeting on 10/26/2020 [pursuant to Massachusetts’ Phase 3, Part 2 guidance, which Mattapoisett is allowed to follow due to the town’s grey/white status]

Respectfully,

Concerned parents, guardians, and caregivers to Mattapoisett elementary school students
