In 1893, US forces overthrew the last Hawaiian monarchy. Though the islands had already been subject to colonization and travel by Americans lead by the excuse of “manifest destiny”, this officially overtook and damaged Hawaiian culture. In the 1700s, Christian missionaries travelled to Hawaii and began stripping native Hawaiians of their culture, labeling it as “sinful” and “savage”. Ever since the first contact and colonization of Hawaiian peoples and land, Hawaiians have been forced to speak English (and were punished if they spoke Hawaiian), nearly wiped out their language, many oral traditions have been lost to oppression, couldn’t practice religious and ancestral ceremonies, were made subject to land destruction and deforestation, and they were overall forced to assimilate and wear “American” clothing. To deny the existence of these events is simply unjust.

Therefore I, and many others, have proposed that the Hawaiian people are given an opportunity to vote for statehood, to be a territory, or to be independent. Thank you for reading.
