Borderers have borne the brunt of the worst of the delays and cancellations, many people are simply fed up with the poor service from Tweedbank to Edinburgh on the Waverley Line.

I am calling on Scotrail to work with the Scottish Government to improve performance on our railways, because hardworking commuters and passengers deserve better.

In January, I met with Scotrail, Managing Director, Alex Hynes to discuss months of delays, cancellations, lack of carriages (overcrowding) and some of the worst performance figures in two decades.

Poor Scotrail performance on the Waverley Line is affecting the lives of many Borderers.  Cancelled and late trains are having a negative impact on commuters, particularly for people working in Edinburgh.  Being consistently late to work, or indeed not arriving at work at all is having a detrimental impact to employee reliability, performance and job security.

Furthermore, passengers paying full fares are expected to stand on a regular basis.  Disappointingly, Transport Secretary Michael Matheson has confirmed there is a delay to the new Hitachi trains, which would have unlocked more carriages for the Waverley line to help with overcrowding. Borderers now have to wait until the end of 2019 to see a minimum of six carriages on peak times trains.

It was unsurprising that Transport Focus, a passenger watchdog, recently published  results of the their survey, which shows that passenger satisfaction in Scotrail has reached its lowest level since 2003.
