Keep Arizona State University closed for the fall semester
Why this petition matters
With COVID-19 still a rampant problem in Arizona, where the curve hasn't begun to flatten, testing is still unavailable to most, and people are still dying. I was shocked to receive an email tonight on, 4/30/2020, saying campus plans on resuming in the fall with in person classes. They tried to reassure us by saying "ASU will implement whatever safety measures and health protocols are necessary to keep students and employees safe." But isn't the safest thing for everyone to not go to campus at all? How are we supposed to social distance when there are lectures with 100+ students and in between classes it's nearly impossible to not accidentally bump into someone while rushing across campus to your next class? How are we supposed to feel comfortable sitting at desks where other students just sat 10 minutes prior to us, when COVID-19 can last on a surface for two or three days? The concept that this will not be a problem in 3 months is ridiculous. So I'm petitioning to keep campus closed. Students and employees need to stay safe during this time, and the university needs to let us stay home. Even if the curve flattens over the summer having thousands of students and staff all back is just asking for us to have another outbreak.
