Michael Cope is 46 and has served almost 26 years in prison for self defense against the man that molested him after school for many years and was the one that attacked to kill Michael first. Michael had no intention of hurting or killing anybody but he had to fight for his life! He is the one that called the police right away and told them what happened. There were no witnesses. The investigator told him if he wouldn't have called the police, they would not have known he was even connected. Who's to say Mike's word wasn't true? Nobody could prove it wasn't but maybe they could have if the lawyer would have been honest! He could have ran and been free all of these years but he did what he thought was right, the honest thing to do. Look where he ended up? Where was justice?? He had a court appointed lawyer that did not defend him. Michael told him every single detail of that day and the time leading up to that day and his lawyer withheld that information. This information could have saved Michael from prison or changed his sentence drastically. He pushed Michael to plead guilty and take a deal or he was getting the death penalty. He was only 20. He was young and scared and thought his lawyer knew what to do. Michael is a model inmate. He hasn't had any charges since early 2000's. All of the guards,  the Chaplin,  and many others that know him say that he is a good man,  no danger to society, there is absolutely no reason for him to be kept there,  and he should be set free. He has taken class after class, and has been working in prison industries for 15 years. He has held a steady job for 18 years. Mike has been up for parole 3 times and have been denied, based only on the crime and they still don't know the whole truth. All we were asking for was another hearing where the facts, letters, and accomplishments can be heard. I believe in this man 100%. All deserve a fair hearing and for their time spent in prison, their accomplishments, and their disiplinanary records to be looked at and considered. There are many innocent men and women in prison. Even if they did The crime, nature and seriousness of the crime will never, ever change! Prison is overcrowded and the good, reformed men and women should get out. They all deserve a chance to show who they really are. Parole is not entitled, but earned so the ones that have earned it deserve a chance. We are now asking for an immediate release, clemency, or a pardon. Please join me in signing this petition.
