The Iceland supermarket chain has recently trialled the recycling of plastic bottles, whereby customers would receive ten pence for each bottle returned, this limited trial has been very successful.

Following the successful implementation of a charge to customers for single use plastic carrier bags, the price of which is due to go up to ten pence, the Government should also force large supermarket chains to implement the introduction of machines which reward customers to recycle plastic bottles.

A similar scheme has been in operation in Norway for quite sometime and has resulted in the highest level of plastic bottles being recycled in the World.

Environental initiatives should not just be about charging consumers, but should equally offer the ability for them to also be renumerated for their efforts.
