Irrespective of whether you believe in the impact of mankind on the climate, the messages promoted, for example recycling, are key to supporting a growing global population without adding to the poverty, disease and starvation endemic. To consider paring down the amount of coverage this receives in our children’s education is short-sighted and unfair (to our children who will then be ill equipped to understand and respond to these, and new challenges). It is vital that we keep these kinds of topics at front of mind.

Apart from the very important moral issue of addressing global warming, the topic raises many points in science and social studies. I like the way that the curriculum relates conservation of energy to alternative energy sources and political and economic issues they raise. Global warming also allows for raising topics like infra red radiation absorption, formation of ozone, distribution of gases in each layer of the atmosphere, CO2 absorption in photosynthesis, etc.

The young generation need to be educated on the risks of living irresponsibly where energy use and C02 emissions are concerned. They are the next generation who will be responsible for making a difference. We get the kids more involved and the world will become a better, more cultured place.
