The parents of children attending P.S. 254 Q The Rosa Parks Elementary in Richmond Hill, New York are very concerned with the safety our children while crossing the streets near school (Woodhaven Boulevard and Park Lane South). Woodhaven Boulevard is one of the busiest streets in Queens and hundreds of young students and parents cross it and the adjacent streets each day getting to and from school.
Across the city, many elementary schools have at least one crossing guard at busy intersections to ensure the safe passage of the young students and parents, but our school NEEDS ONE at this dangerous intersection. Very often, rush hour commuters come close to striking the pedestrians as they cross. Many parents have had first-hand experiences of almost getting run over by cars while walking with their kids. Drivers often speed to attempt to run red lights and/or are simply not paying attention as they speed past the children. It is an extremely stressful environment for those that walk our kids to school each day.
We should not have to fear for our lives while taking our kids to school on a daily basis! Please help us sign this petition to urge key decision-makers to come together and rectify this safety issue by granting the appropriate sanctions, funding and staffing for crossing guards at the relevant intersections of Woodhaven Blvd. and Park Lane South during the school year. Safety of the children should be everyone's number one priority. Thank you for your support.
