Tulane Student Body started this petition to Michael Fitts and

A previously started petition has called for the decision to make all Tulane classes this semester pass/fail. The reasoning for this, mainly, is that we (as students) are "unsure" and ill prepared for online learning. Tulane students are some of the most well prepared and intelligent young adults in the country and this switch to mobile learning, while it may be an extreme inconvenience, does not constitute a complete overhaul of the education system. Students receive 3 classes that they are able to take pass fail for a reason. Tulane stives to create an environment for all students to the best of their ability, and that has now been taken away from students. We have all rushed to move out, to get a car, to fly, to go home. While this is immensely stressful, the proper course of action, once at home or at a temporary location, is to practice social distancing. Regardless of whether or not you are sick, you should not be leaving the house for at least 2 weeks after returning from Tulane. This will provide us students, and professors, ample time to navigate Zoom and readjust to our new learning system. Obviously, Zoom cannot provide the same level of in-person engagement. However, we have already paid our tuition and attended our professors lectures and they remain ready and eager to teach.

Making classes pass/fail greatly impacts the current plans of Tulane's students. It may sound appealing to have a pass/fail semester, no stress, minimal worries, minimal effort needed to pass a class. However, this means that no matter how well you are performing in a class, it will not impact your GPA. Pass/fail effectively eliminates a semester of grades that could be used to boost a prior unsatisfactory GPA. A pass/fail implementation would also greatly decrease the motivation of current students. For many, taking classes at home is already difficult enough to manage. A pass/fail system would hurt these students even more, more than those who believe their learning is being compromised through online learning.

We are undoubtably living in times of extreme distress, but this will not be remedied by a pass/fail system. Instead, it poses to stress students more because now we have lost a semester of grades along with not being on campus. It is now that we must come together as a community. We must support those professors which have given so much of their time to navigate a new system solely for our benefit. Please sign this petition if you believe that making classes pass/fail will only increase the stress that Tulane students are feeling during this trying time. Now is the time to act, and now is the time to recognize that while we have lost much, we have not lost all.
